Overview
Vacant since 2008, the old St. James Hospital building, located in the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark, is getting a new lifeline. Through this public/private partnership, Baldwin and Newark Public Schools will create a specialized high school that will offer courses in architecture, computer-aided design, and construction technology in addition to offering concentrations in the traditional trades such as plumbing, electrical, and HVAC.

The Newark School of Architecture & Interior Design will offer a curriculum that will not only allow students to pursue courses in architecture and design, but it will also allow students to opt for the school’s trade programs. Students who opt for the trades program will work hands-on during apprenticeships with the district’s own trade workers and internships with local developers.
Baldwin is proud and humbled to be part of this project that will give the city’s young people a sense of purpose and passion and empower them to become productive members of society. Providing individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to secure better-paying jobs leads to better job opportunities, economic growth and development in the community.
